The death of the Messiah!

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

He dies?

round stone and tomb

Wait a minute, I don't get it! are you saying the Messiah comes and then gets cut off from the land of the living? Why?

Did He accomplish His mission, or did He fail?

There are many questions on this subject, and the purpose of this blog, is to show what the TANAKH has to say. Firstly we will review the Prophecies that reveal His death.

He will be killed, then Temple destroyed.

Daniel 9:26

After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary...

How He will be killed.

Isaiah 52:13 - 14

See, my servant will act wisely ; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness—

Isaiah 49:16 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.

Psalm 22:14 - 17 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.

ISAIAH CHAPTER 53

1 Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2 He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground.

He had no stately form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him.

3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.

Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

4 Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows;

yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted.

5 But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

6 We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth.

He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,

so He did not open His mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away, and who can recount His descendants? For He was cut off from the land of the living;

He was stricken for the transgression of My people.

Isaiah 52:10 The LORD will lay bare his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.

He died, then rose to life!

Psalms 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell securely. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.

Isaiah 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so my own arm achieved salvation for me, and my own wrath sustained me.

Psalm 18:46 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!

2 Samuel 22:47 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior!

Job 19:25 But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth.

Psalm 22:30 Posterity will serve Him, they will declare him to a new generation. They will come and proclaim His righteousness to a people yet unborn—all that He has done!

But Why? Why did He need to die?

Because sin separates us from God.

Isaiah 59:1-2 Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. .

Sin is death, but lifeblood makes atonement.

Ezekiel 18:20 The one who sins is the one who will die.

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make an atonement for your souls upon the altar, since it is the lifeblood that makes atonement.

The Messiah paid our penalty of sin to REDEEM us.

Isaiah 53:6

We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
